This time of year, with all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it can be especially difficult to stay balanced and keep your health and wellness routine going. Let’s face it — the holidays can be rough. Ever stand in line at the grocery store three days before Christmas Eve? Or maybe you know what it’s like to wake up after large holiday meal — in a food coma — letting the rest of your day go to waste.
While the “holiday crazy” is totally normal (we ALL go through it in one way or another), we wanted to share some ideas with you that can bring a bit more peace to the hectic vibe that usually comes with this time of year.
So, here’s a list of 5 things you can do to stay healthy and stress-free this holiday season.

1. Plan Ahead
Santa shouldn’t be the only one who’s making a list and checking it twice. Intentionally taking time to plan your day and your week will increase your productivity and reduce some of the inevitable stress that comes with this season.
While things don’t a go according to plan, having a plan to begin with will allow you to make minor adjustments rather than panic when something derails.
So, make a list on your phone. Time block your day. Set reminders. We are sure you’ll reap the benefits of planning by having some time to unwind at the end of the day.
2. Try This Simple Breathing Exercise for Stressful Moments
Stuck in traffic? Or maybe in a really long line at the store? Focus on your breath. You can practice something called “segmented breathing.”
Start by taking a few deep breaths in and out of the nose. Then, breathe halfway in… pause… breathe all the way in… pause… breathe half way out… pause… breathe all the way out… pause. Do that a few times and see how you feel. Always take some full breaths before and after the “segmented breathing” part.
This exercise is sure to clear and calm your mind.
3. Eat “Holiday Healthy”
It’s the holidays and you will probably see a lot of family and friends while eating a lot of food. Instead of feeling bad about eating all the things, we say, “enjoy them!”
Make sure your plate is balanced — that means get as many colorful foods on your plate as possible. Of course, include some seasonal favorites. Also, avoid rushing through your meal. When we rush, we forget to taste and enjoy our food, and can easily eat too much.
So, slow down, savor the moment, and delight your palate!

A little bit of movement every day goes a long way. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy; it can be as simple as going for a walk! Sterling Ranch has a number of internal trails you can enjoy. You can also head to a nearby Open Space or State Park for a hike or a trail run.
Better yet, turn your active time outdoors into a family activity! The kids will love discovering new paths and running around, while you enjoy moving your body (maybe even breaking a sweat?) and getting some fresh air.
5. Enjoy Your Favorite Part!
Make the most of this season by doing the things you really love to do, and can only do this time of year. It is easy to get busy and forget, so put the fun holiday things on your calendar and make them a priority!
If you adore curling up in front of the TV and watching holiday movies, make time to do that! Or maybe it’s the lengthy dinner table conversations that you love. Host a celebratory dinner party and enjoy!
‘Tis the Season
Get organized, practice intentional eating and breathing, move your body and do the things you love this holiday season. If you do, you are sure to start the upcoming year with more joy and less stress! Sit back, relax (maybe just for a minute?) and take in what this beautiful time of year has to offer!
