Protecting Our Night Skies
Preserving our heritage of dark skies through environmentally responsible outdoor lighting
There’s something truly magical about being outside at night. You can gaze up and look for constellations, catch a glimpse of a shooting star, or simply take a moment of solitude to contemplate and admire the beauty of the universe. The stars remind all of us to slow down, enjoy the moment and not to stress the small stuff. At Sterling Ranch, the stars might feel a little closer than other locations in the Denver-Metro area. That’s because we’ve committed to comply with the International Dark Sky Initiative. The Dark Sky Initiative is an international campaign to reduce light pollution; by doing so we can expose the vibrantly starry skies.
The Dark Sky Initiative was created by the International Dark Sky Society, whose mission is to preserve and protect the nighttime environment and our heritage of dark skies through environmentally responsible outdoor lighting. At Sterling Ranch, we couldn’t agree more with the importance of protecting our night skies and have enthusiastically joined this mission.
Smart City. Smart Homes.

HONORING THE DARK SKY INITIATIVE
About Light Pollution
Light pollution is the result of modern living — streetlights, outdoor home lights, illuminated windows, cars, and offices all shed artificial light into the world once the sun goes down. This floods the skies with artificial radiance, disturbing our circadian rhythms and messing with ecosystems while wasting our natural resources. Reducing light pollution at Sterling Ranch allows our residents to enjoy the beautiful night skies that come with living so close to nature. Had a long day? Kick off your shoes, have a seat on your porch, and gaze up at the stars. You’ll gain perspective and inspiration as you reflect on your place in the universe.
Benefits of reducing light pollution
- Enjoy the beautiful night sky
- Get more rest and sleep because your body is less disturbed by unnatural lighting
- Restore ecosystems by honoring nocturnal animals and their natural patterns
- Reduce energy dependence and energy use
- Save money while conserving natural resources
