We hope you marked your calendars and got your ticket for the upcoming wine tasting at Infinite Monkey Theorem, this Saturday from 3-7pm! (If you missed out, don’t worry, we’ll have more events like this soon!) While you might already be a wine connoisseur, we thought some basic tips on wine tasting might be helpful for anyone looking for a little prep.

The Four Basic Tips for Wine Tasting

LookThis might seem obvious, but it’s easy to just take a sip without using your other senses to gather information about the wine. Hold it up to the light to see the color and opacity, and swirl it in the glass to see if it “sticks” (this tells you how viscous the wine is, which is a clue to how much alcohol and/or sugar it has).

Smell – Don’t be shy. Stick your nose in the glass and take a deep breath. Wine is delightfully fragrant, and by smelling it first you’ll get all kinds of information. Is it fruity? Floral? Earthy? Start with broad categories and see what you detect first, then go from there.

Taste – When you take a sip, pay attention to how the wine feels in your mouth. Is it full and rich, or thin and light? How long does it take before the flavors are completely gone? What flavors are predominant, and do they change as the wine moves from your lips to the back of your throat?

Think – The most helpful question to ask yourself is whether the wine tasted balanced or not. If so, wonderful! You’ve found a great wine. If not, what was missing, or what was there too much of? Sweetness, acidity, and tannins all play into balance. Most importantly, of course, did you like it?

Wine Words

Wine is all about slowing down and savoring the moment. So don’t forget the most fundamental rule of wine tasting: the best wine is the one that you like. Don’t get too hung up on etiquette if that spoils the fun. Enjoy!
